The Forms of “get”

My Wonderful Dog

I got my big sweet dog a few years ago. Before that, I had only  gotten 1 other dog. He is 1 of the best things I have ever gotten. We often get to play together and I get so much joy from him. Of course, he gets a lot of love from me. He is getting older, which makes me a little sad, but I hope we will get to have many more years together.

Different Forms of “get”

This little story is a clear example of how “get” can be used in many tenses and is used in all of the verb forms: present/infinitive, past, past participle, and present participle, (continuous.)

Present

The present form is easy. It is just “get.” This is true for the phrasal verbs, main verbs, and others. Here are examples.

We often get to play together and I get so much joy from him.

Of course, he gets a lot of love from me.

Past

“Get” is an irregular verb, so it changes a lot when you form the past tense. It changes to “got.” My story only has 1 example.

I got my big sweet dog a few years ago.

Past Participle

The past participle of “get”  is “gotten.” It is used in the perfect tenses. in my story, I use past perfect and present perfect tense.

Before that, I had only gotten 1 other dog.

He is 1 of the best things I have ever gotten.

Present Participle

The present participle form, “getting,” is the form that we use in the continuous tenses. Easy, right.

He is getting older, which makes me a little sad.
